Wintry Weather Continues To Wreak Havoc For Motorists

It's another cold day in the GTA and with temperatures well below the freezing mark motorists can expect it'll be another slippery day on the roads.

The latest traffic incident resulting from the first blast of wintry weather involved a Toronto Police officer being struck during a routine traffic safety blitz.

The cop, who was stationed at Don Mills south of Eglinton, was pulling cars over around 1am Friday. He was using a flashlight to wave cars over to the shoulder when one car just kept going and ran over his foot. The driver, a 36-year-old woman, reportedly had her air conditioner blasting to defrost the windshield but only ended up creating a sheet of ice on it (pictured). The officer is expected to be okay.

Anyone who has driven in the last 24 hours can attest to the fact that ice patches are everywhere and if you don't have winter tires you could be putting yourself and other drivers at risk. That was the case Thursday, when the weather triggered more than 800 accidents, including a fatal crash that closed Highway 400 near Finch. A truck-driver was killed after he tried to avoid a car that had spun out in front of him.

It was reported that police were called to a crash every minute during the height of the storm. And it looks like there's no relief in sight weather-wise just yet as the city issued its first extreme cold weather alert of the season.
