Cabbie Shaken Up But Alive After Driver Fires Shots Through His Window

Toronto Police are dealing with an apparent case of road rage that's left a cab driver lucky to be alive and detectives on the hunt for a gun toting suspect. After a wave of deadly shootings over the weekend, a Toronto cabbie is feeling fortunate he didn't join the growing list.

This latest scare happened late Monday morning at Eglinton and Victoria Park, and like many of these incidents, had a rather uneventful beginning. The cabbie was travelling along Sloane Avenue when the driver of the car behind him started persistently blowing his horn. The taxi did the right thing, pulling over to let the impatient person by. But it apparently wasn't enough to satisfy the motorist.

That driver was seen reaching around for something in the back seat and then pulled alongside the taxi. The cabbie wasn't suspecting what happened next - at least two shots came whizzing into one of his back windows, shattering glass and sending him ducking for cover.

"When he come beside me, they shot me twice," a shaken Mohammad Khan relates. "Shot me twice, bang, bang. And I was scared. I'm almost dead. I'm lucky to be alive." He claims nothing unusual happened on the road and that the attack seems to be totally unprovoked.

But cops speculate the man may have been in a hurry - and that was enough to spark the violence.  The car was last seen heading northbound on Wyndcliff Crescent. The driver is described as:

  • Black,
  • 5'8",
  • 190 lbs.,
  • Short black, curly hair,
  • Black eyes,
  • Small round eyeglasses.
Cab drivers are used to getting tips. But the only one Khan wants is the tip that turns this guy in. Call  (416) 808-3304 if you know who he is.
