Two people are dead after a snowmobile crash near the Muskoka Lakes around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The victims, both male, were driving with a group of two others on a marked trail near Goltz and Falkenburg roads when they lost control of their vehicle and hit a tree.

The victims have been identified as Rino Mazzuca, 51, and his cousin, 51-year-old Antonio Mazzuca, both of Woodbridge.

One of the men died at the scene. The other died on his way to hospital.

OPP Const. Peter Leon said the trail was icy and packed with snow.

“It’s somewhat dangerous out there to say the least,” he told CityNews.

“Just because you can travel at a 50-kilometre maximum speed limit doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the speed you should be travelling at. If the conditions are icy you need to travel according to those conditions so we don’t have any unnecessary tragedies or any further deaths like these.”

The OPP’s Bracebridge detachment is investigating. There’s no word on what caused the crash at this point.
