A 16-year-old boy who died when he was struck by a train in Oshawa on Monday afternoon has been identified as Jacob Hicks.

Hicks, who was a student at nearby Maxwell Heights Secondary School, was wearing headphones at the time of the fatal crash, Durham Regional police said Tuesday.

"I'm devastated, like he was my best friend and he was the funniest guy ever," said Brad Pereira. "He always had a smile on his face."

CityNews has learned the teen was also texting at the time of the crash.

"He was texting me when he was walking," said friend Lexie Laffan. "And then he just stopped replying."

The collision happened around 3:30 p.m. on Wilson Road, south of Bloor Street. The teen, who was on his way home from school, crossed the tracks into the path of an oncoming CN Rail train.

He was at a crossing with traffic barriers, bells, and lights, Durham Regional police said Tuesday.  However, there is no pedestrian barrier, and trains at that crossing do not sound their horns, police said, because of local bylaws.

Hicks may have been unaware of the eastbound train because he had headphones on at the time, police confirmed. He was first taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to a Toronto hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators have ruled out suicide.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story had the wrong name of the boy's high school.
