Horse farmers are holding a protest at Queen’s Park Wednesday to protest planned cuts to the race track subsidy.
The group, including the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association, argues that its survival depends on slot revenues, which are under threat by the Ontario government.
Currently, revenues are split between the province, race track operators and horse farmers. Operators and horse farmers split 20 per cent of all revenues, with the province keeping 80 per cent.
However, with the province facing a $16-billion deficit, Finance Minister Dwight Duncan is arguing that Ontario should keep the industry’s share – $345 million last year.
In a statement Wednesday, Duncan said that money could pay for over two million house calls from doctors, or over nine million hours of home care.
