The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has identified a man who was fatally shot near Dupont Street and Lansdowne Avenue Monday.

Frank Anthony Berry, 48, was killed during an altercation with Toronto police.

The SIU is still investigating and has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case. Eight Toronto police officers are also involved.

Police were called to Campbell Avenue just before 11 a.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a man trying to break into a car.

Plainclothes officers in an unmarked cruiser confronted the suspect, who allegedly pulled out a knife.

Witnesses say the man refused commands to drop the weapon.

The man then entered nearby backyards with police in pursuit.

Berry was shot and rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The SIU investigates cases involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
