The automobile industry was hit with yet another recall Saturday, as Chrysler announced plans to recall almost 600,000 Dodge trucks and vans in
Canada
and the
United States
in order to replace the gear-shift blocker.
Chrysler says long-term wear could cause the shifter to jump out of park without the key in the ignition.
It's not known how many of the affected vehicles are in
Canada
but the recall affects more than 570,000 Dodge Dakota trucks, Dodge Durango SUVs and Dodge Ram vans from the 2001 and '02 models years. Also affected are 2002-model Dodge Ram pickups.
Chrysler officials have said the problem has led to nine confirmed injuries, but no fatalities to date.
Until the problem is fixed, Chrysler is asking owners of the affected vehicles to engage the parking brake whenever the vehicle is not in use.
