A frightening combination of speed and alcohol is being blamed in the death of a 15-year-old girl following a devastating car crash Sunday.
The victim, 15-year-old Eugenia Migounov, was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle which lost control and hit another car at about 9:30pm at the intersection of
Bathurst St. and Steeles Ave. W. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The driver of the car, a 17-year-old male who can't be identified, is facing charges of
impaired driving and criminal negligence causing death.
He appeared in court Monday and was released on $35,000 bail.
The car also slammed into a concrete bench and a TTC bus shelter. Four other people suffered minor injuries in the crash.
"It was a terrible, terrible scene to be at," recalled tow truck operator Alan Habiba. "The girl was pulled out by paramedics, and she was still alive when she was pulled out of the vehicle. They tried to resuscitate her in the ambulance at which point she died in the ambulance."
Migounov's school vice-principal told
CityNews how students were coping with the loss of their schoolmate.
"This is the worst nightmare for an adult, a family, a parent, an administrator, a school," said Tom Kolin, the V.P. for Newtonbrook Secondary School. "A 15-year-old soul. (It's) difficult for all of us and we're all trying to cope with it and deal with it."
It's the 8th traffic-related fatality so far this year for Toronto Police.
"Very, very tragic happening, a young life taken away," noted Toronto Traffic Services Det. Wally Watts.
