You'll probably never read a word by a writer named
Tung Desem Waringin, because his material is mostly based in another language in his native Indonesia. But you have to admit he certainly knows how to draw a crowd.
The author of a new book about marketing showed off just how much he knew about the subject on Sunday, when he pulled a stunt that made headlines around the world.
What did he do? He chartered a plane, got on board and proceeded to fly over an area near the capital of Jakarta, dropping thousands of dollars in cash to the waiting crowd below.
An estimated $10,700 came pouring out of the high flying freebie as it hovered overhead for just a few minutes. It probably won't surprise you to learn that about 500 people had heard about the coming money drop - publicized heavily by the scribe himself - and were waiting anxiously to pick up whatever they could.
There was a huge scramble for the dough, as the bills - in the native denomination of the rupiah - floated slowly down to the ground below. For most, it was literally a windfall. Many Indonesians live in poverty and survive on less than a twonie a day.
It's not the first time the publicity conscious Waringin made his presence felt in his home country. He promoted his first book by parading through the main streets of the capital on a horse dressed as one of Indonesia's most famous war heroes.
That book became a best seller. He's hoping this one will, too. After all, there are now at least 500 people who have enough money to go out and to buy it.
