So the Toronto Internet company employee decided to take his revenge in the way he knows best - by Google bombing his old acquaintance.
What does that entail? It's a method tech savvy web people use to ensure their search result comes up first on the widely used Google search page.
The technique allows a user to employ certain disparaging words - 'utter failure' was a phrase that brought up an anti-George W. Bush site - to link you directly to a site about someone you don't like.
And in a world where Google can potentially list millions of pages, being first on that list carries a huge weight.
"I just got fed up last Friday and I decided, you know what? I'm just going to simply Google bomb him," Devilla confesses. "I'd say 9 or 10 results on Google for 'deadbeat house mate' returns stuff related to him.
Is the practice all in fun or is it harmful? Opinions differ, but Joey knows where he stands.
"It's a smear campaign but you know what? It's the last resort. I have exhausted every option available to me. I have waved the carrot so many times. It's now time for the stick."
Still, his bomb didn't exactly explode as he'd hoped. The target now lives in the U.S. and refused a
CityNews request for an interview. But he seemed unconcerned about the Google bomb, which Devilla is still hoping will one day have its effect.
How can you defend again Google bombing and defamatory web pages?
