Had Gabor Werkmann not mounted a camera to the front of his high-powered motorcycle, police may have never known what led up to the crash that claimed his, and another motorist's life.
The video, retrieved from the tragic scene on
Bloomington Rd. east of Kennedy Rd., showed Werkmann, 29, and two friends playing a virtual game of Russian Roulette on wheels for nearly 40 minutes, weaving in and out traffic at speeds that reached up to 195 kilometres and performing stunts that jeopardized the safety of anyone in engine-revving range.
Werkmann would eventually lose control of his vehicle and crash head-on into a car in the opposite lane.
He died at the scene and the front-seat passenger of the Pontiac he hit, 63-year-old Arnold Hall, was also killed.
On Wednesday, the two men who rode along with their ill-fated friend were in court for sentencing.
Krisztian Nemes, 30, of Toronto and Istvan Mihaly, 37 of Stouffville, were handed six-months of house arrest and just 18-months of probation each. They have also been banned from driving for two years.
"It's a sad situation," said Jenny Stubington, Mihaly's neighbour.
"Two people have lost their lives and this man is a father and a husband and the ramifications of his actions have just been a tragedy."
And while many deride the sentencing as too lenient, Stubington doesn't feel it's unjust.
"You know an old-timer friend of mine told me when I was a young woman that we aren't so much sinful as we are foolish."
