Unruly Football Fans Swarm Security Guard At Union Station

Dozens of Toronto police officers descended on Union Station Thursday night after unruly football fans leaving the Rogers Centre swarmed a station security guard.

The guard was taken to hospital and treated after being punched in the face during the melee. The fans were leaving the stadium after the Metro Bowl game, where the St. Mike's Kerry Blues defeated the Pickering Trojans 18-0.

About 40 to 50 police officers were called to the scene to calm the disturbance, which occurred in the walkway between the stadium and the train station.

"(The) security guy was hurt. He was in the tunnel. They swarmed him and he got some injuries. He's gone to the hospital," Sgt. Ed Lamch said after the situation had been resolved.

"No (it doesn't surprise me). Unfortunately we don't know what causes these things. Sometimes the excitement, sometimes drugs or alcohol."

Four people have been arrested.

Most of the fans involved were students from Pickering, who got on their GO trains and headed home as police looked on.
