It's bad enough that Marco Calabro lost his best friend to what he suspects was a murder.
But now the Woodbridge teen has to deal with the fact that while Adam De Prisco lay dying in a Mexican hospital, someone was ransacking the boys' hotel room.
"They took the camcorder off me," he laments. "The last memories I have of Adam."
He believes the thieves also tried to break into the safe and take the duo's passports.
It was another shock to the young man who has already had to process so much in so short a time.
De Prisco died Monday night in Acapulco, but controversy continues to swirl about the circumstances of his death. Police claim he was the victim of a hit and run driver.
But Calabro maintains he was beaten to death after he danced with another man's girlfriend inside a nightclub.
An autopsy will be performed here when the 19-year-old's body finally makes its last journey home on Friday.
"The goal is to sort out some of the questions that exist around this case," explains Ontario Chief coroner Dr. Barry McLellan. "We're not aware whether an autopsy has been conducted."
But Marco is already sure what McLellan will find. "A doctor took me into the room and said by the circumstances of his body, he didn't get hit by a car."
Relatives were able to bring back X-rays from Mexico and the coroner will be looking at them closely.
York Police Chief Armand La Barge promises the family's concerns will be looked into. But because the crime took place in another country, it will be hard for the locals to accomplish much.
"Despite our problems we enjoy one of the best criminal justice systems in the world," La Barge confirms. "You go to other countries that's not always the case."
Meanwhile, Calabro is convinced that whoever took his camera did it for more sinister reasons than just a simple robbery.
"They thought there was evidence," he suggests. "But there was nothing."
The family has demanded the hotel show them the security video taken that night, but officials with the resort have so far refused.
