Canadian Government Gets Involved In De Prisco Case

The Canadian government is speaking up about the death of a Woodbridge teen following complaints from the family that it wasn't doing enough.

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay talked with both Carmalita De Prisco, the mother of slain 19-year-old Adam De Prisco, and his Mexican counterpart late Monday about the case.

De Prisco was killed earlier this month outside a nightclub in Acapulco. Mexican authorities had been investigating the case as a hit-and-run, but the family contends he was beaten to death after dancing with another man's girlfriend inside the bar.

A preliminary autopsy conducted by Ontario's chief coroner Barry McLellan determined that De Prisco's injuries were consistent with being knocked down, possibly by a vehicle, rather than a beating.

MacKay urged Mexican officials to conduct a full investigation into De Prisco's death. Speaking with the victim's mother, he promised that his department would closely follow any developments in the case.

But Carmalita De Prisco said none of her questions were answered in her conversation with the federal minister.

De Prisco's funeral will be held in Woodbridge on Thursday. That's the day he was to have returned from his vacation in Mexico.

Friends and family filled the Scott Funeral Home Tuesday night for the visitation.

"He was the one, the one person that you never expect that to happen to, you know?" said a friend of De Prisco's.

"I guess (it's) just become a reality now," another added.
