High Park Declared Safe For Dogs Again

Just in time for the holiday weekend, the off-leash area of High Park has been reopened.

But not everybody trusts the go-ahead, which Toronto Police issued Thursday.

Maybe that's because the reason for the antifreeze-soaked bread that poisoned some Toronto dogs, two of them fatally, is still somewhat of a mystery.

Some have theorized that an angry gardener was trying to get rid of raccoons by placing the poison in the area.  But officials say there's no reason to be sure that's the case.

Others speculated it was an over-the-top reaction to recent arguments about the size of the leash-free realm of the park. That, too, is unproven.

"We can't speculate. We don't have concrete information at this point that would lead to a disgruntled gardener," explained P.C. Wendy Drummond.

So what's left in the wake of the incidents, which also left four pets ill (they've since been cleared to go home), is a lot of nervous dog owners.

They're not sure what really happened in the large green space in the city's west end, but they're certain it's something strange, and some aren't willing to risk Fido's health by going back to the park.

"We'll have to rebuild our confidence in the off-leash area," said John Cleary, a visitor to the park.

Police assure that they've taken "extreme" measures to examine the space for more contaminated consumables, and haven't found any. That's why at about noon on Thursday, the bright yellow caution tape was removed from the park's parameters to allow guests - both the two and four-footed kind - back in.

With warm weather and a long weekend ahead, chances are the crowds will start to romp in the popular spot again. But until authorities find out what's up in High Park, it's also likely many pets will be confined to leash's length.
