On Sunday, police suggested a Toronto man who drowned at Wasaga Beach a day earlier should never have been that far out in the water.

What was likely intended as a day of fun on the surf and sand took a tragic turn for 20-year-old Irfan Samed Jogiat.

He reportedly took to the water on a small inflatable dingy Saturday afternoon, but the wind took hold of the floatation device and carried Jogiat into deeper water. For reasons still unclear, he then allegedly leapt from the mini-raft and disappeared underneath the water.

"The male became separated from the raft and was unable to swim," said OPP Const. Mark Edwards. "The deceased and his friends were all non-swimmers wading out in the water."

Police say a man on a Sea-Doo pulled the victim to shore and began CPR. EMS crews arrived a short time later, but it was too late.

Previous to Saturday's tragedy there had been 10 reported deaths over the last decade at Wasaga Beach.

Cops warn people who use inflatable rafts or similar devices to mind their location on the water, especially if they struggle with swimming.

Police are also asking any and all of the dozens of witnesses to Saturday's accident to call the Huronia West OPP Detachment at (705) 429-3575.
