He looks totally different than the shot you've seen of a man with a scraggly beard and long unkempt hair. When Igor Kenk walked back into a Toronto courtroom on Wednesday, he was almost unrecognizable.
The main suspect in a massive GTA bike theft ring appeared clean shaven and with very short and different coloured hair (top left), as he briefly appeared before a judge for a follow-up appearance. Kenk is finding that unlike bicycles, the wheels of justice turn slowly. His case has been put off until next month.
The newly groomed Kenk ran from cameras following his appearance and grabbed a cab, taking off before reporters could ask him any questions.
The 49-year-old was released on bail earlier this week,
after being charged with 58 counts of theft and drug possession.
Police raided a number of locations in the city last month and found thousands of stolen bikes. There were so many, they were forced to hold open houses in two separate buildings, trying to reunite the wheels with their owners. So far, less than 500 of them have been returned. There are still about 2,500 left.
On Tuesday, police moved all the remaining evidence to a
single warehouse on Strachan Ave. They haven't yet decided what to do with them all, and are considering holding another open house or staging one of the biggest bike auctions in Toronto history to clear out the backlog.
