A five-year-old boy who was hit by lightning last week has died.

A spokesperson at the Hospital for Sick Children confirmed Kyus Caines passed away sometime after 8pm Friday.

On August 12, the boy was rushed to hospital in critical condition after overcast skies in Brampton unexpectedly sent a lightning bolt onto the soccer field where he stood holding a metal scooter.

Kyus’ mother, 26-year-old Dulcineia Caines, and a three-year-old boy were also hurt in the incident, but were released from hospital days later.

Witnesses were in shock after the freak incident and described the strike as a fireball that came without warning. Though the sky was dark, there was no rain or thunder.

The lightning bolt blasted two holes in the soccer field and scorched the fence at a nearby tennis court.

Three other children and the babysitter of the younger boy were nearby but escaped unharmed.
