Hundreds of couriers and cyclists stood in a show of solidarity and protest Wednesday afternoon at the site where Darcy Allan Sheppard died Monday night.
The rally stopped traffic at Avenue Road and Bloor Street for hours, as friends and sympathizers of deceased made their voices heard.
Sheppard, 33, died following an alleged altercation with former Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant.
Cyclists at Wednesday’s gathering mourned, celebrated the victim’s life and raised their bikes in unison.
“It kind of struck a chord with me and I wanted to come out and show support,” said Jenny Hill.
"I'm a cyclist and I'd like to feel safe and from what happened it makes me wonder how safe we can be on the road,” added an attendee named Ali.
The incident has heightened the constant tensions between motorists and cyclists in the city, forcing both to point fingers at the others for their perceived lack of safety and consideration
Meanwhile, a day after being charged with criminal negligence and dangerous driving causing death, Bryant stepped down as CEO of invest Toronto, even as he proclaimed his innocence.
The Toronto Bike Messenger Association is also planning a fundraiser to help pay for Sheppard's burial costs.
