Miller’s Possible Successors

Tory Vows To Stay On As PC Leader, But Will Party Let Him?

When Mayor David Miller announced on Friday that he would not be seeking a third term, the speculation began as to who could replace him.

Miller won handily against John Tory (pictured) and Barbara Hall in 2003. By the time 2006 rolled around, only councilor Jane Pitfield dared to oppose him.

But things changed and Miller’s popularity took a huge hit in recent months.

That led to what looked an awful lot like campaigns on Toronto’s streets: both deputy prime minister George Smitherman and former Progressive-Conservative party leader John Tory came out of the woodwork, making plenty of public appearances during the civic workers’ strike and saying what they would have done differently.

On Friday, just hours after Miller made his decision, Tory issued a press release saying that many people were encouraging him to run, including several Toronto councillors.

But there were a few who are probably not supportive of Tory’s bid: Adam Giambrone, Denzil Minnan-Wong and Karen Stintz are all thought to be eyeing the city’s top job.

Statement From John Tory

I would like to thank Mayor Miller for his public service. He has served the City of Toronto as a councillor and Mayor for over 15 years and we salute that.

While I have had many differences on issues, today is a day to celebrate the public service and commitment of David Miller.

I would at this time like to thank the hundreds of people who have been contacting me on the street, by email, Facebook and other means, encouraging me to run. I am also gratified with the encouragement of many Councillors throughout the city.

I am taking their comments seriously as this city has serious problems that require serious solutions. The next election will be about renewal of the city. People tell me they are looking for vision, competence, better services, and better value for their tax dollars.

I look forward to continuing to discuss these issues with people across the city.
