Garbage Fees Could Increase In 2010

After enduring a six-week garbage strike this summer, Torontonians are likely in no mood to hear about a potential hike in trash fees.  But it could become a reality next year if city council accepts the recommendation of staff.

Garbage fees could jump by two percent in 2010, representing hikes of $4-8 per household. That's despite the city announcing Tuesday that it saved over $33-million during the job action.

The city, however, counters that it didn't pocket any savings on garbage costs, and may have actually lost millions due to cleanup costs at temporary dump sites.
