TTC Fare Hike May Be On The Horizon

Torontonians already pay some of the highest public transit fees in North America, and according to a published report, you may have to throw even more change in the fare box in 2010.

A fare hike could be implemented next year. It's not known how much the price could go up, but asking for an extra quarter from riders would reportedly raise transit revenues by $45 million.

Speculation of a fare increase comes as the TTC rescheduled its monthly meeting to Nov. 17, where the operating budget, which next year is facing a $100 million shortfall, will be the top item on the agenda.

Moving the meeting to an earlier date provides commission members with the required six-week time frame to prepare a fee hike, according to a report.

Word of a possible increase comes after Mayor David Miller promised a freeze on TTC prices this year.

TTC Chair Adam Giambrone won’t consider service cuts and any new money from the province is unlikely.
