An 11-year-old boy is clinging to life after he was struck by a van on Lawrence Avenue West, near Keele Thursday afternoon.

The victim was rushed to Sick Kids Hospital with serious injuries following the accident just after 12:30pm.

He sustained head trauma and internal bleeding.

The eastbound lanes of Lawrence were closed at Culford while emergency crews worked to free the boy from beneath the vehicle using a tow truck.

The Grade 6 student and a classmate were attempting to run through a red light when the tragedy occurred.

Odette Martells' 11-year-old son was with the boy when he was struck.

"He said that he was crossing the street with his friend and the friend slipped.  They are very close friends.  He's very devastated at the moment."

The driver of the van remained on scene, but it's not clear whether charges will be laid.

Police are seeking witnesses.

If you saw what happened, call (416) 808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
