A Native protest against the harmonized sales tax (HST) has taken over the downtown core.
The march blocked traffic at the peak of rush hour, including an impromptu rally at the intersection of Yonge and Dundas streets.
Currently, those with Native status cards are exempt from point-of-sales tax.
Under the new legislation, which combines the federal and provincial levies, they would have to pay the tax upfront and then apply for a rebate at the end of the year.
"I think it's incredibly awkward and cumbersome," Blaine Commandant, Wahta Mohawk First Nation, outlined.
"The point-of-sale exemption is the best way to go."
Another protester pointed out that many Natives live in remote areas and returning to stores would cost too much.
Ontario Aboriginal Affairs Minister Brad Duguid says the province supports demands for the exemption at point of sale and is urging Ottawa to get behind the move.
