A 57-year-old man has died after he crashed into a tree while riding a snowmobile Saturday afternoon.

Police say around 2:30pm, the man was travelling on an official snowmobile trail in Oro-Medonte Township when he veered off the path and struck a tree.

Emergency crews transported the victim to a Barrie hospital with life-threatening injuries, but he was pronounced dead a short time later. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.

Police are withholding the man’s identity until next-of-kin are notified.

He is the third snowmobile-related fatality in two days.
