A Peel police officer has died after suffering a critical head injury following a crash in Brampton late Monday.

The two-vehicle collision happened around 11pm at Steeles and Airport roads. The police cruiser ended up wrapped around a hydro pole and the officer -- a two-year veteran of the force -- was transferred to Sunnybrook overnight.  He passed away on Tuesday.

Authorities said he was on general patrol when the crash happened.

"He was not responding to a call at that time," Cst. J.P. Valade said.

The driver of the other vehicle -- a 22-year-old Brampton man -- was also taken to hospital with a minor injury. Witnesses are being interviewed to determine the cause of the crash.

Peel Police have not publicly released the identity of the married father of one.
