Two people have been rushed to hospital after they were hit by a truck at a downtown intersection Monday afternoon.

It happened around 1:30pm just south of Yonge and Maitland, near Wellesley Street.

The male and female victims, both 77, were crossing Yonge when they were struck by a left-turning cube van driven by a 49-year-old man.

Both were pinned under the vehicle, but crews freed the pair and transported them to St. Michael's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Residents said that people often jaywalk in the area due to the long distance between traffic lights.

"You have to take that time," P.C. Hugh Smith said.

"It's a poor choice. It's a matter of 30 seconds. Go to a controlled intersection."

The intersection was closed to vehicle and foot traffic but has since reopened.
