A high rise office complex in Scarborough is reportedly facing private prosecution over the large amount of birds that die after flying into its mirrored windows.
Two environmental groups – Ontario Nature and Ecojustice – initiated the legal proceedings against Menkes, the company that manages
100, 200 and 300 Consilium Place, under the Environmental Protection Act and the OSPCA Cruelty to Animals Act.
More than 800 birds reportedly died after flying into the towers, near Highway 401 and McCowan Road, in 2008 and 2009. Bird safety advocate Michael Mesure claims the buildings have the “most reflective glass windows of any building in the city.”
Some of the animals dying are apparently species in decline. The legal action claims the mirrored surfaces are putting the birds in distress.
Toronto businesses have been encouraged to take part in the
Lights Out program in order to prevent bird deaths.
