NDP Accuses McGuinty Of Rewarding Developers

The NDP is accusing Premier Dalton McGuinty of rewarding developers who contributed financially to the Liberal party.

Ontario’s New Democrats allege that several land developers each paid $5000 to attend a dinner with the Premier. More than a year afterwards, property owned by the East Moratorium Land Owners allegedly increased dramatically in value.

That dinner took place in May 2008. In December 2009, legislation was changed to allow for development on a parcel of land that was previously off limits.

The registered lobby group owned land measuring nearly 1000 acres in north Innisfil. Last year, the land was transferred to Barrie, ending the development freeze.

The group had paid $25,000 to $66,000 an acre for the property. Now, NDP critic Peter Kormos alleges that the value has increased by about $30 million – even before development.

Kormos told the legislature "this stinks"' and demanded to know if McGuinty discussed the changes with the developers over dinner.
