The Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 70-year-old man with first-degree murder in connection to the death of OPP veteran Cst. Vu Pham.

Fred Preston of Sunridge, Ontario was officially charged with Vu's murder Wednesday.  He's also facing attempted murder charges in relation to another officer, who was allegedly shot at.

Preston is currently listed in critical condition in the London Health Sciences Centre-Victoria Campus, under heavy police guard.  He was wounded during an alleged shootout with police on Monday near Seaforth, Ontario.

Police allege Pham was shot and killed after pulling Preston over.  When a second officer tracked Preston down, more gunfire allegedly took place, with the suspect being hit and incapacitated.

"The tragic death of Provincial Constable Pham has impacted us all and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. I am proud of the response by our members to this incident and that charges have been brought against the person responsible," said OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino.

The Province's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is conducting a parallel investigation on the incident.

Pham was allegedly investigating Preston for a domestic violence call involving his estranged wife.
