The OPP announced Thursday a months-long investigation led to the bust of an alleged cross-border gun smuggling ring and 22 arrests.
Police conducted a series of predawn raids Wednesday, including locations across the GTA, and allegedly seized illegal weapons, drugs, cash and stolen property.
The probe, dubbed “Project Folkstone”, started seven months ago and involved several law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Canada Border Services Agency, Toronto Police, York Regional Police, Windsor Police and the OPP.
Authorities executed a total of 28 search warrants on homes and businesses in the Toronto and Windsor areas, including a raid on a Dufferin Street security store just south of Highway 401.
Investigators claim they seized more than 15 illegal guns, $400,000 worth of cocaine, $75,000 worth of pot, cash and stolen goods.
"The illegal smuggling and selling of guns by organized crime groups poses a grave danger to innocent people in our communities and is frequently associated with the illegal drug trade,” OPP Chief Julian Fantino said.
Twenty-two people are facing a total of 250 criminal charges.
