Just when it seemed Mexico was enjoying a break from a string of bad press, a Toronto couple just back from the popular tourist destination is telling a frightening story of being mugged there in a violent attack.
Rose and Tony - who do not want their last names released - were holidaying in Acapulco with their sister-in-law when, while entering their gated community, three men pulled up in a car.
Armed with a knife, the assailants threatened the couple and beat Tony, before fleeing with about $85.
"I'm just glad to be home. I was glad to see my son, my grandkids, my dog. I'm very glad to be home," said Tony.
Rose and Tony say Acapulco is getting more violent, but many travel agents argue any destination has its dangers. You just have to be aware of your surroundings, use common sense, and leave your valuables behind.
Travel agent Paul Hynds has this advice for travellers: "If you're travelling south make sure you keep your documents in a safe place. Don't keep all your money in one area. Use the safes in the hotels."
