It was an emotional day in court for the victims of Daniel Katsnelson, the man who raped them during York University’s frosh week in September 2007.
The two women, who were 17 and 18 at the time of the assault, read impact statements at the University Avenue courthouse Friday as Katsnelson sat motionless.
The first victim said her life will never be the same. To this day she sleeps with the light or television on.
"Rape is like a tattoo, it may fade away but it will never be gone … I'm not sure if I'll ever be truly happy again," she said.
The second victim told the court, “I lost a big part of myself ... I lost my virginity. I felt like damaged goods."
The night of the incident, Katsnelson and his friend, Justin Connort, went from floor to floor at Vanier College residence looking for unlocked doors.
“I can assure you I'll never do anything like this again. I hope everyone, especially the victims, will get some closure. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me,” he said.
But previously in court, when asked what his victims could take away from the incident, he responded they would now know to lock their doors. One of the victims immediately broke down and had to leave the courtroom.
On Friday, the judge cancelled his bail order and placed him in custody. The crown is asking for a 10-year sentence, while the defense is pushing for three to five.
In 2008, Connort pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault – not rape – and was sentenced to three years in jail.
