A judge handed down an eight-year prison sentence Wednesday to the man who raped two first-year York University students in their dorm rooms during Frosh Week in 2007.
Daniel Katsnelson, 27, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexual assault causing bodily harm in January.
The Crown was pushing for a 10-year sentence.
Katsnelson and friend Justin Connort, 27, got into Vanier College residence on Sept. 7, 2007 under the pretense of helping a drunk friend and then prowled floor to floor for 90 minutes hoping to find open doors.
The two men, who’d spent the night drinking, broke into a 17-year-old student’s room and Katsnelson raped her. “Do you want to get lucky with a couple of Jewish guys?” the pair asked the victim. Connort then assaulted the young woman while Katsnelson took pictures. The victim managed to fight back and the pair left her room.
The victim's roommate didn't lock the door when she left for the evening.
The woman is suing York University for $3.5 million, claiming it failed to provide adequate security. The suit reportedly contains 20 examples of alleged insufficient safety measures.
Katsnelson then broke into another room and raped an 18-year-old student.
Both women read emotional victim impact statements in court last month.
The first victim told the court she has to sleep with the television on and that her life will never be the same.
"Rape is like a tattoo, it may fade away but it will never be gone … I'm not sure if I'll ever be truly happy again," she said.
The second victim said she was a virgin when she was attacked.
“I lost a big part of myself,” she said.
Another statement read that day shocked many in the courtroom. A Crown prosecutor read out what Katsnelson said to a probation officer in a pre-sentence report.
When asked what his victims could take away from the incident, he responded: "now maybe she will know to keep her doors locked."
Connort pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault and was sentenced to three years in prison.
