A man is dead following an apparent police chase and shooting in the Port Lands early Monday.

A Nissan Sentra with its headlights off reportedly ran a red light, catching officers’ attention around 1am. That sparked a brief pursuit starting at Eastern Avenue and Leslie Street. The chase was called off near Commissioners and Cherry Streets.

Shortly after a man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Wieslaw Duda, 50.

A police officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries. A spent shotgun shell was at least one piece of evidence collected in the area.

It appears that bullets shattered the windshield of the Nissan and a police cruiser also appeared to have been hit.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to probe the incident. The independent agency investigates incidents between police and civilians that result in serious injury or death.

The area around Cherry and Commissioners was closed for the investigation but has since reopened.
