The province’s Special Investigations Unit is asking for the public’s help after a young man, Junior Alexander Manon, collapsed and died during a police foot chase near York University.

Toronto police say that around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, they stopped a car containing two men on Steeles Ave. West at Founders Rd., around York University.

They say there was a short foot chase and then what they characterize as an “interaction” between Toronto police officers and Manon.

Manon was originally said to be about 30-years-old, but his family told CityNews he was 18. There were also reports he died of cardiac arrest. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

There’s no word yet on why Manon and the other man allegedly tried to evade police, but the officers’ involvement prompted the province’s Special Investigations Unit to look into the case. The agency investigates incidents of serious injury, death or sexual assault involving police and civilians.
