Nearly two years to the day after it happened, families and victims of a fatal drunk driving crash were out in force Friday night, trying to drive home a message of safety and zero tolerance.
Rehan Tanvir, 20, along with Fizza Rizvi,18, were killed when the car Rehan Riaz was driving crashed going 130 km/h in a 60 km zone on Eglinton Ave. East, May 13 2008. Their friend, Usama Bin Farid, was left permanent disabilities. In all, nine people were injured in the six car crash.
So Farid and Asif Tanvir, Rehan’s father teamed up with 54 division officers and M.A.D.D. Canada for a R.I.D.E. spotcheck, along the very spot their devastating accident took place.
“I totally don't remember anything. After 6 days in a coma I came out, I found out my friends were dead and I was injured,” said Usama Farid.
“There is no replacing of my son, but at least we can save other people,” said Asif Tanvir.
Riaz only had a level G2 license at the time of the crash, which means it was illegal for him to consume any alcohol before driving. On Wednesday, he was sentenced to five years in prison, with a ten year driving ban.
Friday’s spotcheck kicks off Canadian Road and Safety Week. The campaign runs from next Tuesday through to Victoria Day.
