A spate of apparent drownings and other water-related accidents claimed the lives of five men this weekend. Two children are also in hospital after being pulled out of the water.

An 18-month-old boy remains at the Hospital for Sick Children after being pulled from a pond on a residential property in the Greenwood area of Ajax Sunday morning.

Authorities said the child's mother found him lying face down in the water and immediately called 911. The child's father started CPR and paramedics managed to get his heart beating again as he was being rushed to hospital.

Durham police said Monday the toddler remains in critical condition.

Another boy is in hospital after he was pulled from a pool in Niagara Falls on Saturday night. Family members performed CPR and he was transferred to a hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.

Five men died across the province this weekend.

Niagara Falls man Christopher Alkerton, 18, drowned Sunday at Rock Point Provincial Park in Dunnville, just a short distance from the shore.

Paul Heffernan, 54, was also killed Sunday in a boat crash on Chemong Lake near Peterborough. His boat collided with two docks and other vessels, throwing him off the craft. His passenger survived the accident.

Toronto man Bun Chang Tang, 31, apparently drowned Saturday morning at Wasaga Beach. He ran into the water to catch a ball and disappeared. He was pulled out of the water around 11:30am following an extensive search.

George Herczeg also apparently drowned Saturday in Lake Muskoka in Gravenhurt. The 84-year-old’s body was found near a dock.

And 26-year-old Michael Daoust died Saturday after he jumped off a cliff into Otty Lake, near Perth. His body was recovered by a dive team.
