Police Reveal I.D. Of Osgoode Subway Shooting Suspect

His name is Curt John (left) and as of last week, he became one of Toronto's Most Wanted.

The 21-year-old is the man police believe is responsible for the shooting at the  Osgoode Subway station exactly a week ago.

The case brought the entire city to a standstill when bullets were fired at a passenger around 10:47am on January 22nd.

Cops were able to reconstruct a lot about what happened that day. They know the alleged shooter and the victim both got off the Jane St. bus and entered the subway system at Downsview on the Yonge-University-Spadina line.

They rode the train together until their fateful encounter at the Queen St. West stop.

Both men are said to have known each other, but police won't reveal what the argument was about that led to the shooting.

John is being charged with attempted murder and several firearm related charges.

But as it turns out, police are well aware of him - he's wanted for a large number of other offences.

Investigators believe he allowed his cousin to use his I.D. after his relative was allegedly involved in the murder of 20-year-old Dominic Shearer-Hanomansingh during the Jamaica Day festivities on July 26, 2008.

He's been charged with being an accessory after the fact in that case. His cousin has since been arrested.

"The allegations against Curt John with respect to that homicide relate to allowing Jimmy John to use his name to obtain some medical care as well as disposing of evidence," confirmed Det. Sgt. Brian Borg.

And that's not all. John is believed to have been involved in a robbery and assault on November 27, 2008.

But his latest brush with the law came much more recently, after an incident at the Jane-Finch Mall on Wednesday afternoon.

Cops say two men asked the owner of a car for a ride to an address on Niska Road in the Jane-Finch area. The man agreed, but when they arrived at the destination, he was hit with a gun and thrown out of the vehicle. The duo then drove off. By the time police arrived, they were gone.

Both men fled in a silver 2004 Ford Escape with licence number BZP 445. Authorities are still looking for the vehicle and have charged John with robbery and forcible confinement in connection with that incident.

Considering all he's accused of, cops really want to catch this guy.

"This individual is extremely dangerous," warns Det. Mario Di Tommaso. "He is considered to be armed and dangerous, and members of the public should not approach this individual. We are appealing to Curt John to get himself a lawyer and turn himself in as soon as possible before anybody else gets hurt."

The subway was shut down for almost 8 hours between St. George and Union stations, as the hunt for the suspect and his weapon went into the dark tunnels and beyond.

Despite an exhaustive effort, police were unable to find him or learn who he was.

That changed when they released stills and video of the wanted man. They credit tips from the public for confirming their worst fears.

The victim in this case was treated for his injuries and released from hospital the next day.

John's described as:

  • Black,

  • 21,

  • 6',

  • 180 lbs.

  • Black hair

  • Brown eyes.

  • Scar on the left side of his face and his left knee

He has been known to go by street names including "Shruffles," "Quashie" and Curt "Ketichnal" John.
