For those with basements prone to flooding, it's a double whammy that's inspiring waves of anxiety.

Piles of accumlated snow are set to melt over the next few days, and to make matters worse, it's expected to rain hard, with the inevitable flooding that usually follows.

There are steps you can take to try and avoid serious damage, and although it's usually basements that suffer through the most soakings, many problems stem from the roof, where drainage systems fail.

"You want to make sure those rain water pipes are discharged into an area where there's going to be a proper flow," advises Anthony Parolin, RCC Waterproofing.  "To make sure they are gong to be draining into the catch basins."

"You want to make sure everything is cleaned out and properly fastened and you don't have any damaged eavestroughs that are going to cause the ice to build up and won't allow the water to drain."

You should also avoid letting snow build up at the side of the house. 

"We're going to be expecting a lot of phone calls, just over the last few days we got a lot of calls," Parolin adds. 

"This Wednesday we're expecting a large volume."
