Cops Warn Of Possible Imposter After Theft Of Police Gear

He's a rookie cop with a neighbouring force and he's hoping his colleagues in another part of the GTA can help him out.

Halton Regional Police are warning the public about the possibility of a phony cop after a robbery on Thursday.

It started sometime after 6pm, when a police cadet with Peel Regional Police parked his car in the lot of a fitness club at 1035 Maple Ave. in Milton. It was his personal vehicle not a squad car, but the young officer was carrying a lot of official paraphernalia inside.

He locked the car and went inside for a workout, returning about two and a half hours later. And that's when he discovered someone had broken a window, reached inside and grabbed some items that only a cop should have.

Halton authorities are now on the hunt for a Peel Police uniform hat, jacket and pants, along with two notebooks. Inside another bag was a police sweater, rain jacket and traffic vest.

The force is also missing a duty belt that contained a baton, flashlight, and a key and radio holder.

And there's one other thing on the loose with the culprit: a pair of handcuffs.

Cops are hoping to use them on whoever stole the gear when they catch up to him. But in the meantime, they're warning the public to demand valid I.D. if they're approached by someone who appears to be a Peel police officer.

Real cops have no problem producing valid proof of who they are when asked.

If you know anything about the theft or where the goods are now, call (905) 825-4777 Ext. 2415 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
