A Toronto man says he was ambushed by undercover officers looking for a murder suspect of the same name.
“I was attacked first,” Sharmake Abdi said on Tuesday.
“That guy put a headlock. Then he’s telling me I’m under arrest. He’s pinning me down and punching me. He’s trying to hit me. His partner is putting the handcuffs on me. I wasn’t resisting. I’m shocked. So many things are going through my mind.”
Detectives knew the Sharmake Abdi they were looking for, releasing his mug shot and describing him as a 6-foot-5-inch man with a slim build.
The one they mistook for the suspect was closer to 6 feet tall with a heavy build.
“At that point they had the obligation to restrain him,” said P.C. Tony Vella.
“Reasonable force was used. They placed him down on the ground. Handcuffs were used. We’re looking at a person who is wanted for first-degree murder. The murder weapon has not been located by police.”
The incident was captured on surveillance video at the Church Street offices of Commissionaires, the security outfit the “wrong” Abdi worked for during the G20 summit. He believes someone there turned him in and now hopes the company will turn over the footage.
On Monday, police arrested the 26-year-old Abdi they were searching for. He has been charged in the July 14 stabbing death of David Darcy, 37. A second man, 29-year-old
Anthony Wong of Brampton, was arrested on Tuesday night.
