A man reported to be around 40 years old lost his life Tuesday after he was struck by lightning in Hamilton's West Mountain neighbourhood.
The victim, who has not been identified as police work to notify next of kin, was struck in the Sanitorium and Scenic Dr. area.
Hamilton residents have also reported power outages as a result of the turbulent weather.
"There is no safe place outside when lightning is present," notes CityNews Meteorologist Adam Stiles. "When you hear thunder, you need to get inside of a sturdy structure and stay away from the windows and electrical appliances."
The storm system, which moved across southern and eastern Ontario, has produced strong winds and torrential downpours.
"We started out the day with hot and humid air, which led to an unstable atmosphere," Stiles added. "And that cold front was the lifting mechanism to fire up this line of thunderstorms."
There have also been unconfirmed reports of a tornado touching down in Hensall, Ontario, north of London, where several trees have reportedly been uprooted.
Heavy winds and rain struck Toronto at around 6pm, toppling light posts on the Danforth. (see video below).
"Tomorrow will be a lot quieter of a weather day, and that's a good thing," Stiles concluded.
