An east-end community has gathered around the victim of a brutal sexual assault in a cemetery.

Police say the disturbing crime happened on July 12 when a 61-year-old woman was visiting her mother’s grave at the Pine Hills cemetery. As she walked along a paved pathway, she was dragged into the bushes, sexually assaulted and beaten so badly she lost consciousness.

Two days later, police arrested a 44-year-old man, Russell Kirkpatrick, and charged him with aggravated sexual assault and attempted murder.

Recently Beach residents have noticed a number of photocopied letters posted along Queen Street East. The anonymous writer asks for people to donate anything they can that might bring a smile to the victim’s face.

“I guess because of our reputation in the community, our values in defending human rights and self-esteem she thought we'd want to get on board with her,” said Lacey Roy, assistant manager of The Body Shop.

"We have elderly women bringing in baked goods, gift cards for spas, manicures or pedicures – anything from the heart. We've had a lot of cash contributed. The idea is she can pamper herself and remind her there's still a world full of caring people reaching out to her."

The Body Shop at 1952 Queen Street East, is accepting donations and will deliver the basket to 41 Division on August 12.
