Employees of a downtown Toronto hotel are on strike – for 24 hours.
Hyatt Regency staff are asking for laid-off workers to be rehired and an increase to work hours. Many workers lost their jobs in last year’s recession, but their union argues that the hotel has since made huge profits.
UNITE HERE and Hyatt management negotiated until midnight on Thursday. When an agreement wasn’t reached, workers went on strike.
It’s bad time for on Toronto institution – the International Film Festival is a week away from setting up its headquarters at the hotel.
But the union says employees will be back to work on Saturday.
