Police aren't certain yet if items of clothing found in a field about 10km from a missing woman's home are connected to her disappearance, but they are certain that something terrible has happened to Sonia Varaschin.
Earlier Friday, they revealed that blood-soaked bed sheets were taken from the Orangeville woman's home and investigators believe they may have been used to conceal her body.
“We’re looking for a beige or cream-coloured fitted sheet and comforter,” Det. Insp. Mark Pritchard said at a news conference on Friday.
“The culprit left the scene covered in a significant amount of blood, both on his footwear and clothing,” Pritchard said.
The suspect likely put Varaschin, 42, in her own car and took her somewhere before returning the vehicle to downtown Orangeville.
Pritchard said that residents should call police if they notice odd behaviour or an unexplained absence in a family member, friend, or neighbour.
“The most likely scenario is that we are looking for someone she knew, or someone that knew her…she may not have known her attacker,” Pritchard said.
She didn’t have a lifestyle or a past that would put her at risk, he added.
Orangeville Police Chief Joseph Tomei read a statement from the family at the news conference.
“Sonia is young, active, hardworking, and caring,” he said.
“The positive support we have received since her disappearance has been terrific. Because of this support, we are confident that Sonia will be found and that justice will be served.”
Varaschin was reported missing Monday after she failed to show up for
work. Her car was found smeared with blood near Orangeville’s main
square early Monday morning and police later found blood in and around
her home.
Authorities admitted Tuesday the nurse had met with
foul play. On Thursday it was revealed the woman’s family has been told
to expect the worst.
Investigators said Varaschin’s boyfriend of more than a year was routinely questioned and has been ruled out as a suspect.
