Child welfare officials are investigating after a two-year-old boy swallowed an ecstasy pill at his Beaverton home and had to be treated in hospital.

Around 7pm on Friday, the toddler began showing symptoms and his parents immediately called 911. The child was transported to an Orillia hospital, but was later transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children.

His injuries were not life-threatening and he was released from hospital on Sunday.

Durham police alerted child welfare authorities to the case and the investigation continues.

Officers are reminding caregivers of young children to keep potentially harmful substances out of reach. These items should not be left on coffee tables and cupboards should have childproof locks.
