The mayoral campaign has taken a nasty turn.
Fake mayoral campaign signs cropped up downtown and real ones were vandalized in Scarborough overnight, apparently targeting front-runners Rob Ford and George Smitherman.
Ten signs were discovered early Tuesday, planted in the University Avenue median at Elm Street. One read: “Wife-beating, racist drunk for Mayor!”. The signs have since been removed. It’s not known who placed the placards there.
Two years ago Ford faced charges in connection to an incident with his wife. Those charges were later dropped. Comments he’s made about refugees proved controversial and this summer it was revealed he had a DUI conviction in Florida more than a decade ago.
And later Tuesday morning, about eight George Smitherman campaign signs along McCowan Road had been defaced with papers that read, “Repent For The Kingdom Of Heaven Is At Hand," in an obvious reference to the candidate's homosexuality.
