GO Announces $213 Million In Upgrades

What costs $213 million and promises to get more people where they're going a lot faster?

It's the money the federal and provincial governments are shelling out for some major additions and improvements to GO Transit facilities over the coming months and years.

The money is part of a $500 million pledge originally announced in February. Some of that money is going to improved parking. But we didn't learn exactly where the rest of the money would be spent until now.

So what's in your future if you use the system? The list includes some upgrades and some brand new stations designed to ease overcrowding and make it easier to get into the city and back out again.

Barrie will be getting a second station downtown by 2011, while Streetsville users will get more room at their recently opened bus facility.

There will an extension to the pedestrian tunnel at the Exhibition Station in Toronto, new bridges for those on foot in Burlington, and more places to leave a bike at 56 stations across the GTA.

And GO will buy 20 new bi-level trains over the next two years with the money, easing crowding and upgrading service.
