A woman brutally beaten at a Mexican resort has come out of a medically-induced coma, and recognizes her husband, according to her family. A trust fund has also been established to help cover her medical expenses.

Paul Giles says his sister, Sheila Nabb, was brought out of the coma on Monday, after suffering a brutal beating early Saturday at the Hotel Riu Emerald Bay in the west-coast resort town of Mazatlan.

The 37-year-old Calgary woman was found lying in a pool of blood in a hotel elevator, and no one has been arrested yet in the case.

The woman's uncle Robert Prosser told CityNews on Monday night that, "Every bone in her face is broken or shattered. She's going to have to have her jaw wired shut and plates put in where her cheekbones were. [The specialist] said it would probably be two to three weeks before she'll be stable enough to be sent home to Calgary."

She wasn't able to speak because of her condition, Giles said.

Nabb, who was vacationing with her husband Andrew, was responsive to questions, recognized her spouse and is breathing on her own, according to a family statement.

Nabb apparently didn’t suffer brain damage in the attack.

She is scheduled to undergo facial reconstructive surgery Wednesday or Thursday based on the outcome of CT scans that will be performed Tuesday.

Her family has set up a trust fund to help cover medical expenses not covered by insurance.
